AI and Creativity
The rapid advance of AI writing tools, image generators and text-to-video models opens a new world for creative possibilities. It also raises questions about the role of the artist, the nature of creativity - and ethics.
Hosts Beth Coleman and Rahul Krishnan dive into these topics with guests Sanja Fidler and Nick Frosst.
About the hosts:
Beth Coleman is an associate professor at U of T Mississauga’s Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (www.utm.utoronto.ca/iccit/) and the Faculty of Information. She is also a research lead on AI policy and praxis at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society (srinstitute.utoronto.ca/). Coleman authored Reality Was Whatever Happened: Octavia Butler AI and Other Possible Worlds (k-verlag.org/books/beth-coleman-reality-was-whatever-happened/) using art and generative AI.
Rahul Krishnan is an assistant professor in U of T’s department of computer science in the Faculty of Arts & Science and department of laboratory medicine and pathobiology in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine. He is a Canada CIFAR Chair at the Vector Institute, a faculty affiliate at the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society and a faculty member at the Temerty Centre for AI Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM tcairem.utoronto.ca/).
About the guests:
Nick Frosst is a co-founder of Cohere (cohere.com/), a Toronto-based startup that develops large language models for enterprise use. Frosst did his undergraduate degree in computer science and cognitive science at U of T and was the first employee of Geoffrey Hinton’s Google Brain lab in Toronto. He is the singer in an indie rock band called Good Kid (goodkidofficial.com/).
Sanja Fidler is vice president of AI research at NVIDIA (www.nvidia.com/en-us/research/), leading the company’s research lab in Toronto. She is also an associate professor of mathematical and computational science at the University of Toronto Mississauga and an affiliate faculty member at the Vector Institute, which she co-founded. The co-author of more than 130 scientific papers in computer vision, machine learning and natural language processing, she has received the University of Toronto’s Innovation Award and the Connaught New Researcher Award, among other accolades. Fidler completed her Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto.

Proud of this talk, his open minded approach to life. A few tears came to me at the end of his talk. 🙏🏻
Is there are no fee fot sixth form of students ?
These individuals lack a theoretical framework and rely solely on data-driven approaches. This effort seems to be an attempt to demonstrate the significance of their field, with no other substance.
Lol Geoffry Hinton lacks a theoretical framework. Sure.
What I don’t understand is how why and when Ai make choices about the information and then communicate in sentences.
lol, he refers prof Radford Neal as though he were still his student
You need to remove the images of people walking with masks...makes the video look out of date and manipulated

Thank you so much, Margaret. Uncle Walter gifted $250,000 in his will to build a stand-alone library to complement Massey College, which was built for grad students. Walter died in 1962. His brother Bob opened the door in 1964. Both are depicted under the eaves on the north side of the building.
Hi
Super AI can not understand what a philosopher‘s thoughts. Cause philosophy talks about morality instead of immorality.
Jim Cuddy is a national treasure. His music was the backdrop to our lives growing up in Canada. I wish he was given an honorary degree when I graduated from UofT in 2005. I'm thrilled he was honored in this way; very well deserved and what a great song to sing at this moment. Wonderful advice too for the graduating class.
This man is a voice of reason, honesty, and inspiration in a world of chaos. I am grateful that this man existed and was able to materialize his gifts, even if they may destroy us all.

Where is New College?
You ruined One Spadina Crescent with the hideous addition. Same as with the addition to the Royal Ontario Museum. Disgusting modernist vandalism.
Woke Education for the silly, just like this ad

Also the person who got EVERY A LISTER WHO HAS BATTLED ADDICTION - ADDICTED IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Thanks for all your expert work regarding climate change cousin.
I have faith I will be one of U of T soon
UofT is very harsh to their undergrads, the extreme low marks they dish out to people essentially blocked people from perusing their masters. They then turn around and accept people with artificially higher marks from other universities who give out high averages. So for that I think U of T is a school that destroys first chances and give second chances to other less qualified students. So the lesson is don't go to U of T for your undergrad go to a easy school and do grad school at U of T.
